Wildest Churn Dash Ever


Okay, I think you are ready for this one. It is not for the faint of heart.
I found it in Texas a few years ago. It is a top that is very rumpled.

It's truly a thrift shop quilt. The fabrics are definitely from clothing or sewing leftovers. The blocks are traditional 12" churn dash blocks. It is hand pieced and measures 56" x 72". The sashing is the fun part, of varying pieced strings.

It is fun to show to people. One friend saw it at sewing. She had to go to an end-of-the-school-year banquet that night (you know, the type where you sit and listen a lot and work to keep an expression on your face that says you are listening as your mind wanders....). And she said she thought and thought of this quilt, wondering how it went together (with an appropriate touch of awe in her voice).

I like to think it was comforting handwork, pieced on someone's lap. Someone who wasn't paying REAL close attention, but who was enjoying their sewing!

    Deb, This is a beautiful quilt. I have tried my hand at thrift shop fabrics a lot but never hand pieced a quilt just yet. This quilt is quite inspiring to me and I might just do that soon. Love the sashing too.

    That certainly is a wild quilt top. But I am also inspired by the sashing...off to the sewing room to work on that idea.

    This quilt is great, especially the sashing. I love proper "hand made with love by ordinary people" quilts like this. Beautiful!

    The sashing is amazing! Got to love that yellow background block - the fabric is wild, then they did they not notice that the block is all topsy turvy too?!?! Awesome :)

    Oh boy, the sashing definitely makes this quilt special... it unifies all the different fabrics in the blocks. The sashing reminds me of some of the Gees Bend quilts. What a cheerful quilt!

    The sashing is a great idea which could come into use one day. Other than that it looks like a modern quilt!

    What a fab quilt--it has so much personality.
    Hope the 'quilt police' don't come to your house and take it. Thanks for sharing. I'd love to see a close up of one of the blocks with the rabbits.

    This is TOO FUNNY, I bought some vintage Churn Dash blocks and they look similar to these, scrappy and wonky. Mine aren't done and I was searching "Vintage Churn Dash Quilts" on google when this popped up, I think I am going to sash mine with chambray and do cornerstones in Kona Snow, so I am looking for inspiration, this is definately worth saving as a favorite. It is pretty cool. :) Thanks for sharing.
