A First

I don't dress up to go to the grocery store. I am usually on the run, grabbing a few things I need. I don't often see people I know. But today, for the first time, someone recognized me from my BLOG.

I had checked out and was bagging my groceries. The next shopper caught my eye and said, "Mary?"
"Nope," I said. "You must be thinking of someone else."
She persisted, kind of talking to herself a little. "Mary? I could have sworn it was you." And then she said something I couldn't totally hear, but I heard quilts and blog.
"I do have a blog," I admitted. And she looked at me and said, "Thrift Shop Quilts."
I was stunned! She did recognize me from the blog.
"Do you quilt?" I asked.
"No," she said. "Maybe I will someday......"

Her name was Lydia (I hope I remembered correctly). She was younger and engaging. In the parking lot, she waved as she drove away in a groovy car.

This blog continues to surprise me. I've written for publication before. I felt pretty anonymous, really, even though my name was on my stories and I had a desk, in an office, with coworkers and everything.

Now I work and write at home. My coworkers have four legs (my dog and 2 cats). I try to stay somewhat on topic (quilts of a thrifty nature). But I continue to be a little surprised at how PERSONAL blogging is.

I'll try to get over that.

  1. funny story. I've had my picture in my local daily with a column I write every Saturday for the last decade and I rarely get recognized in public. But I have to tell you it's there's Murphy-kind of law that says if you choose to make a grocery run or other errand wearing your grubbies, that IS the day someone will take a second look and recognize you. I'm not sure what it says about my picture, since I thought I looked good in it.

  2. Love this story! It's totally true - blogging is totally PERSONAL!

  3. Let's hope she takes up quilting! Another convert is always a good thing!

  4. Oh Deb, I would love to run into you at the grocery store and talk thrift market quilts at the register:)

  5. What a great story!! I doubt I will ever be recognized since my little icon is the squirrel who lives in our front yard and I haven't figured out now to change him and get it to mesh with blogger and my email for give I guess unless I look particularly squirrelish at the store, I am okay!

  6. HOW COOL was that! I keep thinking I am going to get my rear to our local thrift shops when they do that $1 bag thingy and see what kind of goodies I can come up with. YOU INSPIRED ME.

  7. That was me! And I swear, I don't know WHERE I got "Mary." Next time, I'll definitely remember you are DEB!

  8. That's neat! I've only had someone ask me, "What's a blog?" lol :-}pokey
