Off to the quilter

This top went to Kelly Cline this week to be quilted. (You can follow Kelly's quilting adventures on Facebook.) It's a simple top I purchased recently - I love the colors, and I love how it looks on our bed.

We're thinking of using red thread to quilt it. I'm also thinking that instead of trimming the edges straight, I will leave them spiky, for a long-time binding project. Kelly thinks I should use red binding - what do you think?

Special thanks to Barkley for modeling on the top. Pets love to lay down on whatever you spread out of the floor, don't they ...

  1. I love the quilt, nice combination of granny squares and irish chain.
I think red would really make a nice look with the thread and binding. It all depends on how soon you want to use it, long term binding means you can't use it;)

  3. fun quilt. I think I'd probably go white for thread and blue for the binding. that way that red in the quilt will still be the center of attention and not fight... if that makes sense. everybody sees things differently and I'd undoubtedly do a ton of auditions first. love the idea of doing the trickier binding - it will look fab after all that work.

  5. Wow, that is a really cool quilt top.
Yes to the spiky edges, and yes to the red binding. It would finish the quilt off nicely.

  6. Such a beautiful quilt top! I love the idea of spiky edges. I wouldn't want any red to take away from the diamonds.. If I was trimming the edges, my choice would be some muted blue gray.. But since you are leaving it spiky, The red will just look like a continuation in a ziggy zaggy way.. Love that choice!

  7. Hi Deb, What a fun quilt top! My 3 "humble opinions": I love quilting with red thread. Go for it! I like the idea of a zig-zag edge but I wouldn't wish that sewing job on anyone. Try some quirky yellow-green fabric for the binding, to pick up some of those chartreuse patches. When in doubt always give the complimentary color a try!
    Hmmm... chartreuse quilting thread?

  9. I say great choice on having Kelly do it, too! Love the idea of the zigzag border in red...makes sense to me. Not as sure about the red thread....have to think a while on it! But whatever, it will be a fun one! :)

  11. I love the idea of spiky edges, but only for wall quilts. I did it once on a bed quilt and it was uncomfortable. But I have seen other antique quilts that had the top edge finished differently than the other three, so that is an option. Can't wait to see how you finish it!
